FAQ

General

Which phones does it run on?

iPhones and Android phones. The only web page is the live map, for watching other participants.

Does it work without a data connection?

The tripmeter, the stage timing and the modes need only the GPS and the phone clock. A connection is used for the account, stage library, history, routes and live tracking. Routes you record offline wait in a queue and upload later (see Waiting to sync in Viewing routes). A stage that finishes offline shows in History at once and uploads later, in the same way.

Does it work with OBD or a wheel sensor?

No. The distance comes from the GPS alone.

How accurate is the distance?

GPS distance is close but not exact. Trees, tunnels and narrow valleys add error. A calibration factor against a known distance removes the steady part. See the calibration guide.

Why do the trips step in 10 m and not in metres?

A trip shows two decimals: 0.01 km (10 m), or 0.01 mile. Phone GPS cannot measure single metres reliably, least of all at low speed. Even with a good calibration, the trip drifts by more than a few metres over a few km. A metres digit would show noise, not distance.

The two decimals are cut, not rounded, so the trip never reads ahead of the car.

How do I learn a mode?

Tap the ? icon in the app bar of the mode and then Quick guide. The guide shows the screen step by step while Demo mode drives the car. All guides are also under Quick guides in the drawer. The video tutorials of older versions are gone. See Navigating the app.

Is it official timing?

No. The app times from the phone's GPS and clock, for the crew's own reference. The organiser's time is the result. Some events ban phone apps for scoring. Read the regulations.

Plans

What is free?

The Tripmeter and Map modes, for 80 km each day. The Pro modes, such as Regularity, Race and Recce, for 40 km each day in all, the Pro fuel. A kilometre in a Pro mode also counts towards the 80 km, see How the two allowances add up. Both numbers are defaults and can change. A bar under the app bar shows the distance left. When it runs out, the screen shows You are out of fuel until the next day, or until you buy a plan. Basic removes the daily limit in Tripmeter and Map. Pro removes all limits. See Licences and plans.

Can I try a Pro mode first?

Yes. Every Pro mode opens without a plan, and you can drive it on the daily Pro fuel. To try it at your desk, tap the Demo chip in the drawer, then Start demo, or run the mode's Quick guide. The app simulates a drive and uses no fuel.

My stage did not start: You are out of fuel.

The day's Pro fuel is used up. Tap Save stage to keep what you entered and drive it tomorrow, or Go Pro. A stage that has already started always runs to its finish. See Pro fuel.

I bought a plan but the mode is still locked.

Sign in with the account you bought with, then open the drawer, tap the account header and tap Restore Purchases on the Account screen. Purchases are linked to your account, so they follow you to a new phone when you sign in to the same account.

During an event

What happens if the GPS signal drops?

The red bar below the app bar reads Searching for GPS signal. The trips stop counting until a position returns. Correct the distance afterwards with the plus and minus buttons or Sync. See Troubleshooting.

Can I lock the phone?

The app keeps the screen on while it is open. If you lock the phone anyway, or switch to another app, the GPS may stop. Turn on Keep running in the background in Settings to prevent it.

What if the app closes in the middle of a stage?

Open the app again and check the screen. The time card and the Simple TC entry are held in memory only and are gone after a restart. Enter them again. Do not count on a running stage coming back: load it with From library and start it again, and use the roadbook distances to correct the trip. A route recording is lost if the app is closed before it stops.

I tapped the screen and lost my trip.

A tap resets Trip 1 and a long press resets Trip 1, Trip 2 and the section trip. Change what they do in Settings > User inputs. See User inputs.

How do I correct the distance when the GPS drifts?

Use the trip toolbar plus and minus buttons, or Sync at the next landmark in a stage. See the trip toolbar.

Data

Where is my data stored?

Settings are on the phone. Stages, history, routes and live positions are in your account in the cloud. If you never signed in, the data belongs to an automatic guest account on that phone. Signing in moves it to your account.

Can I take my data with me?

  • Routes: export GPX, KML or GeoJSON. See Importing and exporting.
  • A history run: the download icon in Telemetry exports a GPX file.
  • A stage: share it as an .rtstage file. See Sharing stages.

How do I move to a new phone?

Install the app and sign in with the same account. Stages, history and routes appear. Settings, saved layouts and paired Bluetooth buttons are on the old phone. Set them up again.

How do I delete my data?

Delete a route or a history run in its list. Delete the whole account on the Account screen (tap the account header in the drawer) with Delete account. It removes the cloud data. A subscription is cancelled in the App Store or Google Play, not by deleting the account.

Buttons

Which Bluetooth buttons work?

Only the ones from shop.apphero.ee. See Bluetooth buttons.
